What is that yellow shield and what should I do about it? |
||
| So what is that yellow shield with an exclamation point doing on my taskbar? | What should I do about it? | |
| This little annoyance should not be ignored as so many of us seem to do. It is an indicator from Microsoft alerting you to a new update for your Microsoft software. It may be an update for Windows, Internet Explorer, or any other MS application. But make no mistake; it is a very important part of Windows. The yellow shield is part of the Windows Update system. The update could be a security update. When Microsoft finds a bug or security flaw in Windows, they will send out an alert to all computer systems running Windows. This causes the yellow shield to appear in your taskbar. If you turned off Windows Update (a very bad idea) when you installed Windows, you will not see the yellow shield. |
|
First click on the shield. A
window will pop up on the screen. Most likely it will have a button down
at the bottom right corner. Click on this button and get back to what
you were doing, the installer will continue to work until it’s done.
Once complete it will bring up the pop-up again either telling you that
it is done or that you need to restart your computer. If a restart is
required, click on “restart later” and then close all your open windows
before clicking the shield again, then click “restart now. |
| Can I set Windows Update to update automatically? | ||
| Yes, click on the Start button, then Control Panel, then System and Security, (or Security Center). Under the Windows Update category you will see “Turn automatic updating on or off.” (Or if you have Windows 7, just click on Start, put “Windows Update” in the search box and press enter to be taken directly to Windows Update). After you click on “Turn automatic updating on or off”, click on the pull-down menu under the category “Important Updates.” Here you will find “Install updates automatically.” With this selected all updates will be installed whether you want them or not. I personally have mine set to “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.” This gives me more control over my computer system because I can then decide what I want on my computer. You can also set Windows Update to search for updates on a certain day and time if you would like. | ||
