What Other Maintenance Should I Do For My Computer?

Defragmenting Your Hard Drive (Defrag, for short) Divider  Scan for Viruses and Other Malware
Another preventive maintenance procedure that is important for you to do is defragmenting your hard drive. Over time the files on your hard drive become fragmented because when a file is deleted the empty space is filled by a new file. Part of the new file may be put in this spot on the hard drive and then another part of the file may be put in another place on the hard drive. This is fragmentation. It will slow down your computer. In order to remedy this situation you should run a disk defragmenter application at least monthly. Windows comes with a defrag application integrated into the operating system. Running the application is a fairly simple process. To do this, just go to Windows Explorer (My Computer or Windows key + E) right-click the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Tools tab, then the Defragment Now button. Click on Analyze Disk. The application will determine if defragmenting is suggested at this time. The application will tell you how much of the hard drive is fragmented. If it says 0%, there is no reason to defrag your hard drive. I try to defrag my hard drive once a month, even if the Defrag application says 0% because I like to keep it in tip-top shape. Instead of using Microsoft’s integrated Defrag application, I recommend Defraggler which can be found for download at http://www.piriform.com/defraggler. This is free software, so there’s no worry about being required to pay for it, (unless you wish to make a donation to the software developer). Some people think this should be done weekly, but if you set up a scanner to check every day when you login to your computer it can be done monthly. I have Trojan Remover set up to scan my computer every morning when I login. So how do you fight viruses and other malware? First I suggest you have a Security Suite like the one offered by AVG. This is a complete software suite that will catch almost any malware out there. When it doesn’t catch it, running Trojan Remover to scan every day should catch it. Just in case it doesn’t, I also recommend running AVG’s Scan by clicking on the AVG icon on your desktop and then clicking on the Scan Now link to run the scanner.

Scan and Cleanup Your Computer
Next, you should run an application to do a complete clean-up of your computer system. I recommend CCleaner, which can be found at this link: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner. CCleaner is a system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system, allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history, which is a very good way to help protect your privacy.
