5 More Tips

5 Tips - Answers to Ask Jeff Questions
Today I am going to cover 5 more tips to help you better maintain your computer—things you should do to keep your computer in tip top shape and make for a better computing experience.

1.    Keep all your software updated: Keeping your software updated with the latest versions ensures you have the best version of all software and helps prevent most malicious attacks against your computer. That’s not always an easy thing to do when you have lots of software installed on your computer. There are a couple of options available for software to automatically keep you up to date with the latest software. Secunia Personal Software Inspector, (this application is available for free download from http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. Another application worth using is CNET’s Tech Tracker which is available here: http://bit.ly/ehCgCp. Both are worthy applications ready to monitor your computer and keep it updated with all the latest software.

2.    Transfer files between computers or just backup your files: If you have more than one computer and you’re not interested in setting up a network there is a way to share files between them. There is also a smartphone app. Dropbox, online backup http://www.dropbox.com/ gives you 2GB of free backup, 50GB for 9.99/month, or 100GB for 19.99/month. When you install Dropbox on your computer or smartphone it creates a folder that syncs all files copied to it across all your computers and smartphone(s). Whenever you need your file just open the folder from whichever computer you happen to be using and there it is. If you wanted to trade files with someone else, they could install Dropbox on their computer, enter your username and password, then they can access all the same files on their computer.

3.    Do you need to find out your IP Address? Open a command prompt (With Windows XP: Press Windows Key + R and type cmd and press enter; With Windows Vista and Windows 7: Type cmd in the search box and press enter), then type ipconfig at the prompt. This will bring up a long list of network information. Your IP address is listed as IPv4 address. Note: you must be connected to the internet for this to work.

4.    Create an image of your computer system: You’ve just installed Windows 7 on your computer, loaded all the required drivers and application software and set up the computer’s settings to your preferences. Now what should you do? I recommend creating an image of your system. Image software such as Macrium Reflect Free is quick and easy to use. It will create an image of your system that you can save to an external drive or online backup system. Then when everything goes haywire and you want to quickly restore your system to its former glory, just pull up your image copy and restore it all.

5.    Uninstalling unused applications: When there’s an application you installed but never or rarely use takes up space on your hard drive it’s pretty smart to uninstall it. Well most applications leave bits of themselves on your computer after they are uninstalled. Using Windows Uninstall is a good start, but it still leaves too much debris. It can really be amazing how much is left after uninstalling. Some software will install itself to places you’d never expect to find it. That’s why I always use Revo Uninstaller and I use its advanced mode. It may take some time to go through the registry, hard drive, or any other place the software may have hidden its parts, but it’s well worth the wait. Revo will completely remove the application from your computer never to hassle you again. Important note about installing or uninstalling software: Always make sure all other applications are closed and always reboot your computer after an install/uninstall just to make sure the system is clear.

This time I’m going to be answering questions people have asked me on the new “Ask Jeff” program. To Ask Jeff a question, go to: http://besttechcomputing.com/Ask-Jeff.html.

  1. Question 1: How can I find the right audio and video drivers to make my laptop play video better?
Answer 1: Most audio and video equipment comes with the proper drivers. But when it doesn’t, or if you lose the original disk, the best thing to do is look on the equipment manufacturer’s website. Most manufacturers have an easy to find support section with required drivers. If you’re still having problems playing videos on your computer I recommend VLC Media Player (
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). VLC can play just about any video, including DVD’s, you would want to watch.

  2. Question 2: I have 4 GB's RAM but my PC only shows 3 GB, why?
Answer 2: This is an often asked question. The reason you only see 3 GB is because the 32-bit Windows Operating System, which is most likely installed on your Windows computer, is designed to show only 3.5 GB and below. The operating system is limited to only 4 GB the extra memory that is not shown is reserved by the system.

  3. Question 3: I think my computer has a virus. How can I find out for sure?
Answer 3: First, I hope you have good security software such as AVG (
http://besttechcomputing.com/AVG-Main.html) running. Any viruses should be caught by the security software as long as it is updated with the latest updates. Another thing you can do is get a second opinion. I suggest using MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Software (Can be found at http://www.download.com/ Enter Malwarebytes in the search box). Secondly, I suggest running SpyBot Search & Destroy which will find and eradicate several things your regular security software won’t find, such as spyware.

  4. Question 4: I worked several hours on an important file and now I can’t find it. Any idea how to find it? I know it’s on my computer.
Answer 4: The first place to look is in the Recycle Bin (if you haven’t emptied it lately). Double-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, which will show all the files waiting to be deleted. If the file is there, right-click on it once and then click on “Restore” to undelete the file. The second thing to try is Search. If you have Windows 7, just click on the Windows button in the left corner of the taskbar (or the Windows key) and enter the name of the file in the search box. If you don’t remember the name of the file you can search by any word that is in the document and it should be found. With Windows XP you’ll have to click on the Windows “Start” button and then click on “Search” from the menu.

  5. Question 5: My friends keep telling me that I have been sending them email with a link to a site that I’ve never heard of and I never sent such an email. What’s happening?
Answer 5: Your email account has likely been hacked. What this means is someone likely figured out your user ID and password and logged into your email account to send out these malicious emails. Using the email provider’s web interface they can log into your account and send email under your name to all your contacts anytime they wish. Sometimes they’ll even change your user ID, password, or other ID information; this would prevent you from accessing your account. How can it be stopped? Well, if they have not changed your login information, the best thing to do is immediately change your password and security questions. You should then verify all the information in your account profile to ensure it hasn’t been changed. Either change your information back to what it is supposed to be or, if possible, change it to something new; otherwise the hacker will be able to regain access. If you can’t log into your account because the hacker has changed all of your information, you have most likely permanently lost your account; at which time you should create a new account with a new email address and alert all your contacts of your new address.
